May Getaway - Washington DC

Welcome to the May Getaway 2011 version.

We have one destination this time around - the nation's capital - Washington DC.

Our trip started on Friday evening May 6 as we made a three hour drive to Kodak, TN. We stayed at a Holiday Inn Express on the east side of our old home base in Knoxville. It was great to be back in East Tennessee if only for a short time.

The next morning (Kentucky Derby day), we drove up I-81 through Virginia and veered east on I-66 ... following it all the way to Constitution Avenue in DC - smack between the White House and the National Mall.

Enjoy the first set of pictures as we visit the Washington Monument on Mother's Day!

Beautiful East Tennessee just north of Sevierville ... a nice, new HI Express situated beside a huge Bass Pro Shop and Outdoor World. We rented "A Fish Named Wanda" for a night (a fund-raising effort by the hotel for a children's charity).

First glimpse of Washington Monument from Constitution Ave

View from south side of the White House ... our hotel is about five blocks away on 14th street between H and I Streets - great location.

As always SE does a great job handling all the reservations. She signed us up for Hilton Honors points 23 years ago and we trade in our points for these trips. A week in DC with a buffet breakfast (!) every morning and our charge is ... $0! I do my part by using a Hilton credit card every time I eat out (which is usually just once a month or so of course)

US Capitol in background ... we are on 14th and Pennsylvania at Freedom Plaza fountain

Last year we were in Colorado Springs for Mother's Day weekend (SE went up Pikes Peak) ... this time around, she and LJE went up to the top of the Washington Monument. Not a traditional Mother's Day, but a whole lot of family fun.

Coming soon ... Mother's Day pictures from Washington Monument, WWII Memorial, Korean War Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam Vets Wall, and more.
